Note what those noise figures are and are not. Westinghouse states 52 dBA for the iGen5000c without naming a distance on its product page. DuroMax states 61 dB at 25 percent load for its XP9500iH inverter, naming the load but not the distance. Champion states 74 dB(A) specifically at 23 feet for its open-frame. Three manufacturers, three different disclosure conventions, so treat the gap as directional rather than as a precise decibel difference. What is not in doubt is which type is louder. For standard open-frame portables, Champion publishes "about 12%-20% depending on load applied." Champion also says in the same document that this is "perfectly acceptable for running common commodities found in your home such as TVs, computers, your appliances," so we are not going to claim it fries everything. What Champion does name as needing an inverter is a specific short list: a UPS-style battery backup, a pellet stove, and a high-efficiency furnace control board. Those are the loads that genuinely require the cleaner wave.

Our read, which is more conservative than Champion's: if your outage plan includes a home office you depend on, medical equipment, or a furnace whose control board is the difference between heat and no heat, buy the inverter or put a power-conditioning device in front of those loads. If it is lights, a fridge, a pump and power tools, open-frame is fine and cheaper.
