What a Standby Generator Quote Must Include (2026)
The 16 line items a complete standby generator quote must show, with verified permit fees, manufacturer gas-line sizing, and the rows installers leave out.
Quick answer: A complete standby generator quote shows 16 line items, not one bundled price. It names the generator model number and its kW rating on your fuel, the transfer switch make, model and amperage, the gas pipe size and the measured run length, the jurisdiction's own permit fee separately from the installer's coordination fee, and the startup and commissioning visit that the manufacturer's warranty requires before coverage begins. The rows most often missing are freight, the panel load calculation, the gas meter capacity check, startup and commissioning, and the first scheduled service at 25 engine hours. A quote missing the gas pipe size, the meter responsibility, or the transfer switch model is not a fixed price, it is an opening number: those three omissions are what turn a $9,400 quote into a roughly $16,000 invoice. Ask for every row in writing, itemized, before you sign anything.

An itemized quote looks more expensive than a bundled one because it prices the work the bundled one will bill you for later as a change order. The complete quote is usually the cheaper project.
A complete standby generator quote is 16 line items, not one number. The machine is the row everyone reads. The rows that decide whether your final invoice matches your quote are the gas pipe size, the measured run length, who is responsible if the utility meter cannot deliver the fuel, the transfer switch model and amperage, and the startup visit the manufacturer's own warranty requires before coverage starts.

Row 7 and row 8 in detail: the gas line is where quotes break
This is the single line that turns a fixed price into an opening number, and it is the easiest one to check yourself before you sign.
A generator is a large gas appliance. Generac's own installation guidelines put a 22 kW air-cooled unit at 327 cubic feet per hour of natural gas at full load, and give the conversion as BTU per hour equals cubic feet per hour times 1,000. That is roughly 327,000 BTU per hour, on top of your furnace, water heater, range and dryer. The manual states the requirement plainly: size the gas meter for 100 percent generator load plus all appliance loads.
Fuel demand, from Generac's published table for air-cooled units (approximate values, verify against the fuel data decal on your specific unit):

Then the pipe. Generac's manual is explicit that the generator's inlet size does not dictate the pipe size, and publishes maximum run lengths by trade pipe diameter and delivered pressure. For a 22 kW unit on natural gas:

Required delivered pressure is 3.5 to 7.0 inches of water column for natural gas and 10 to 12 inches for propane vapor. On propane, a 16 to 22 kW unit at 10 to 12 inches of water column is limited to 40 feet on 3/4 inch pipe, 175 feet on 1 inch, and 550 feet on 1-1/4 inch, measured from the second-stage regulator.
Read those two tables together and the failure mode is obvious. A 22 kW unit sitting 60 feet from the meter cannot be fed by 1 inch pipe at normal residential pressure. If the quote says "gas line" with no diameter and no measured distance, nobody has committed to the pipe that job actually needs, and the difference between 1 inch and 1-1/2 inch across 60 feet of trench is real money.
What to write on the quote: the pipe trade size, the measured run length in feet, the delivered pressure the installer is designing to, and one sentence naming who requests and pays for a utility meter upgrade if the meter cannot carry generator load plus appliance load.

Row 4 and row 5 in detail: name the transfer switch
"Transfer switch included" is not a specification. Generac's own residential transfer-switch catalog lists service-entrance rated automatic switches at 100 A, 150 A, 200 A, 300 A and 400 A, variants with integrated surge protection, variants with an integrated meter socket, variants with an integrated load center at 20 to 40 circuits and at 42 circuits, and non-service-entrance switches including a 16-circuit essential-circuit model. Those are very different products at very different prices, and they change what actually stays on during an outage.

The switch also carries the code obligation. NFPA 70 (the National Electrical Code) covers this under Article 702, Optional Standby Systems, whose section 702.5 is titled Interconnection or Transfer Equipment and includes 702.5(D), Inadvertent Interconnection. In plain terms: approved transfer equipment is what stops your generator from backfeeding the utility. It is the safety device, not an accessory.

Row 11 and row 12 in detail: what the jurisdiction actually charges
Installers commonly bill a single "permits" line. That line contains two very different things: the government's fee, which is public and fixed, and the installer's labor to draw the site plan, produce the electrical riser diagram, file, and stand for inspection. The second is legitimate work. It is not the permit fee.

The spread is the point. The government's own charge for the same job runs from about $40 in Houston to $500 in Baton Rouge, while the installer's coordination line commonly runs $200 to $800 in Florida and $400 to $1,400 in Texas. If your quote shows one number for "permits," you cannot tell which half moved.

Row 13, 14 and 15 in detail: the rows the warranty depends on
These three rows cost the least and are omitted the most, and together they decide whether you have a warranty at all.
Generac's 5 Year (5M) Limited Warranty for residential and commercial standby generators, read on August 16, 2026, sets out the following. Coverage runs five years or 2,000 hours, whichever comes first, and the schedule is not flat:

Travel is capped at 100 miles and three hours round trip per occurrence from the nearest Independent Authorized Service Dealer, whichever is less, and anything beyond that is yours. The warranty explicitly does not cover the cost of normal maintenance including installation and start-up, starting batteries, fuses, light bulbs, engine fluids and the labor attached to them.
Three conditions in that document map directly onto quote rows:
- Coverage begins "upon the successful start-up and/or on-line activation of the unit." If startup and commissioning is not a line on your quote, the clock has not started and nobody has been paid to start it. That is row 13.
- "Proof of performance of all required maintenance must be available." Generac's owner's manual requires an engine oil and filter change and a valve clearance check after the first 25 hours of operation, then oil and filter every two years or 200 hours, with air filter, spark plugs and valve clearance at four years or 400 hours. The 25-hour service is the one that never appears on a quote. That is row 14.
- "Unit must be registered and proof of purchase available," and warranty repairs must be performed by an Independent Authorized Service Dealer unless Generac authorizes otherwise in writing. That is row 15, and it costs nothing except remembering to do it.
Warranty terms differ by brand and this section is Generac's document specifically. Champion, by contrast, publishes 10 years on the 201222 generator and 2 years on its transfer switch. One more commissioning item worth naming in writing: the exercise timer. Generac's owner's manual gives the 22 kW units a 5-minute low-speed exercise at 1,950 rpm, configurable weekly, bi-weekly or monthly, while 9 to 11 kW units exercise 12 minutes at full 3,600 rpm. Placement: the rows that decide where the pad goes
Site placement is not a line item, but it silently prices rows 3, 7 and 10. Generac's installation guidelines set these minimums for air-cooled units, citing NFPA 37 Section 4.1.4 and Southwest Research Institute testing:

The manual also notes the unit ships on a composite pad that can sit on 5 inches of compacted pea gravel or on a concrete pad, and that a concrete pad is required only where codes require one. If your quote assumes a gravel base and your jurisdiction requires poured concrete, that is a change order waiting to happen. Ask which one is priced.
Side by side: a complete quote and an incomplete one
Both examples below are illustrative, built from the cost bands this site publishes and the documents listed in Sources. They are not quotes we received. The incomplete column and its invoice are the same $9,400 to roughly $16,000 example already published in the real cost of a whole-house generator, extended by the four rows that example never priced because most quotes never show them.

The incomplete quote is $5,430 cheaper on paper and about $2,400 more expensive in the end. Every row that moved is a row nobody priced, and the buyer had no leverage on any of them, because the trench was already open.

The line items decide the price. These decide what happens when the project goes sideways.

Deposit norms, lead times and cancellation terms are governed by state contractor law and vary widely. We did not find a national primary source that publishes typical figures, so this table asks the questions rather than inventing the answers.
Ten questions to ask before you sign
This list is the canonical version. It expands the seven questions that used to live inside the generator buying guide.
- Is this quote based on a completed site survey, or from photos? Only the first one holds.
- What is the generator's model number, and what is its output on the fuel I actually have?
- What is the transfer switch make, model and amperage, is it service-entrance rated, and does it manage loads?
- What gas pipe size and measured run length is this quote based on, at what delivered pressure?
- If the utility meter cannot carry generator load plus appliance load, who requests the upgrade, who pays, and how long does it add?
- Is a panel load calculation included, and does my panel need an upgrade? Show me the calculation.
- What is the jurisdiction's own permit fee, and what is your coordination fee, as two separate numbers?
- Is startup and commissioning included, who performs it, and who registers the warranty?
- What exactly triggers a change order, will you cap it, and will you get written approval before doing the work?
- Who shows up for warranty service in year three, and how fast after a regional storm?

What we could not verify
Publishing this list is more useful than pretending the gaps do not exist.
- Freight, startup, first service, and haul-away have no published price. No manufacturer, dealer association or utility publishes a standard residential figure for any of them. Those cells say not published, not an estimate.
- Deposit percentages, lead times and cancellation terms are not published by any national primary source we could find. They are in the contract-terms table as questions.
- CPSC's carbon monoxide guidance page blocked automated retrieval on August 16, 2026. Placement guidance on this page therefore comes from Generac's installation guidelines and NFPA 37 as cited there, not from a fresh read of the CPSC page. The CO rules on this site's safety guide are unchanged.
- The Generac RXSW200A3 spec sheet PDF returned a 404 on Generac's own server on August 16, 2026. The switch is named here because it appears in Generac's live transfer-switch catalog, but its detailed electrical ratings are not quoted on this page.
- Generac's air-cooled installation guidelines and owner's manual carry 2018 and 2016 revision dates. They are the documents Generac distributes, and both instruct the installer to verify against the fuel data decal on the specific unit. Treat the tables above as the design basis, not as a substitute for the decal.
- The warranty section is Generac's document only. Kohler, Cummins and Briggs & Stratton warranty documents were not re-read for this page, so no cross-brand warranty claim is made here.

The three that cost the most when they are missing are the gas pipe size and run length, responsibility for a utility meter upgrade, and the panel upgrade, because all three are discovered after the trench is open and your leverage is gone.
How much is the permit for a whole-house generator?
The government's own fee runs from roughly $40 to $90 in Houston to a flat $500 in Baton Rouge, with $75 in Wake County, $80 in Cobb County and Savannah, $128 minimum in the City of Raleigh, $130 minimum in New York City, and $227.90 in Miami-Dade, all read from those jurisdictions' own fee schedules. The larger number on most quotes is the installer's permit preparation and inspection coordination fee, commonly $200 to $800 in Florida and $400 to $1,400 in Texas. Ask for both as separate figures.
Does a standby generator quote have to name the transfer switch model?
It should, and if it does not, ask. Generac's residential catalog alone lists service-entrance rated automatic switches from 100 A to 400 A, versions with surge protection, versions with an integrated meter socket, versions with a built-in load center, and non-service-entrance switches including a 16-circuit essential-circuit model. Those cover very different amounts of your house at very different prices. Without a model number you cannot tell which one you bought.
What gas pipe size does a 22 kW generator need?
It depends on the run length and the delivered pressure, and the generator's inlet size does not decide it. Generac's own table for a 22 kW air-cooled unit at 5 to 7 inches of water column allows 10 feet on 3/4 inch pipe, 30 feet on 1 inch, 115 feet on 1-1/4 inch and 250 feet on 1-1/2 inch. At the lower 3.5 to 5 inch pressure band, 1 inch pipe is limited to 10 feet. A quote that does not state the pipe size and the measured distance has not priced this work.
Will the gas meter need to be upgraded for a standby generator?
Sometimes, and it is the installer's job to check before quoting, not yours to discover afterward. A 22 kW unit draws about 327 cubic feet of natural gas per hour at full load, roughly 327,000 BTU per hour, and Generac's manual instructs the installer to size the meter for 100 percent generator load plus all appliance loads. The upgrade is the utility's work, on the utility's schedule, and it is not usually included in an installer's price.
Does skipping the startup visit void the warranty?
It does not void it so much as never start it. Generac's 5 Year (5M) Limited Warranty states that coverage begins upon the successful start-up and on-line activation of the unit, requires registration with proof of purchase, and requires that proof of all required maintenance be available. Startup and commissioning is a paid visit by an authorized dealer. If it is not on your quote, nobody has been paid to perform it.
Is a cheaper generator quote actually cheaper?
Often not. In the worked example on this page, an incomplete $9,400 quote lands at roughly $17,250 once the gas line, meter upgrade and panel upgrade are discovered, against $14,830 for a complete quote that priced all three up front. An itemized quote looks more expensive because it prices work the bundled quote will bill you for later, at a moment when the alternative is an unfinished project in your side yard.
